Mahashivratri: The Reason Why It's Celebrated
Maha Shivratri is observed every year on Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi in the month of Falgun, as per the Hindu calendar. There are several stories that surround the Maha Shivratri festival. The event commemorates the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, also known as Shakti, as per Hindu Mythology. According to folklore, worshipping Lord Shiva and fasting for the entire day might reap the blessings of a year of diligent prayer to God. On Mahashivratri, ladies pray to Lord Shiva for blessings for their husbands who are as mighty as Lord Shiva.
Another Puranic mythology tells of Samudra Manthan, the huge fabled swirling of the sea by gods and demons in search of immortality juice. Sadly, the toxin 'Halahala' was the first to emerge. Lord Shiva ate the poison while holding it inside his throat, thereby saving the entire world. As a result, his neck became blue, and he is commonly referred to as Neelkanth. As a result, Maha Shivratri is also observed as a day of thanksgiving to Lord Shiva for sparing the world from the terrible poison.
As per the third mythology, Brahma and Vishnu fought over who is the highest and most powerful. Then, out of nowhere, sprang a massive Lingam, which stunned and overpowered both of them. They wanted to know how tall it was, but it seemed to stretch beyond eternity. Lord Shiva emerged from the Lingam and stated that 'He is supreme above all three (Trinity)' and that he must be honored in the Lingam form. Since that time, Rudrabhishek has been presented to Shivling in order to satisfy Lord Shiva.
The bel leaves are specifically presented to Lord Bholenath on this day. The roots of this tree are thought to represent Girija, Maheshwari in the stalk, Dakshayani in the branches, Parvati in the leaves, and Gauri in the blooms. This is why Lord Shiva has a soft spot for Belpatra.
Now that you have a thorough grasp of the tales surrounding Maha Shivratri, let us look at why fasting on this day is important and what benefits it provides for us.
Maha Shivaratri: What it means to us
Shivaratri Vrat has been practiced from earlier civilizations. As per the Vedas, Goddess Lakshmi, Indrani, Saraswati, Gayatri, Savitri, Sita, Parvati, and Rati all fasted on Shivaratri.
On Maha Shivratri, unmarried women fast in order to get married and receive a husband like Shiva, and married women fast in order to maintain harmony and calmness in their marriages. Worshippers who desire to practice Masik Shivaratri Vrat, on the other hand, can begin it on Maha Shivaratri day and carry it for a year. The day commemorates the triumph of good over evil in life and in the cosmos. According to legend, Maha Shivaratri commemorates the occasion of Lord Shiva's cosmic dance.
